Done
Ron,
I've added you on the list, and have sent you the two prior
communications. You'll note I initiated both of them - this is NOT by
design. Please feel free to break the ice, by contributing suggestions,
advice, comments or whatever to this forum.
Also, let me know if you'd like a copy of either of the RLL-1 memos.
"RLL-1: A Representation Language Language" (HPP-80-9) presents first a
description of what (I think) a representation language language is, and
proceeds to overview our particular implementation. "Details of RLL-1"
(HPP-80-23) is low level specifics ("the dirt", a friend suggested) of
this system, as it stands now.

But our campus mail system is very poor and stuff often gets lost or
misdirected. If that was the address you used before, just try it again.
Thanks. (And I'm sorry for the hassle - Rutgers administrative services
have some VERY major problems.)

Requests for RLL System
∂2 Feb 1981 2205-PST Student1 RLL-1
To: GREINER
I have just finished your "working paper" on RLL-1 and would be interested
in learning more about it and, perhaps, experimenting with it as it may be
applied to a project on which I am working. Briefly, I am building a Neuro-
anatomy/Anatomy knowledge base which I hope to be able to use as a reference
for the INTERNIST programs as well as for the basis of a Neurological Dia-
gnosis and teaching package. The relational aspects of functional neuro-
anatomy and the limitations of the current system (which utilizes a series
of related hashfiles), have prompted me to look to see how others have
tackled the problems of knowledge base management. To this end, I have
already contacted Mark Stefik about the UNITS package, and while exploring
that area, I came across your paper. If you could direct me to sources
of additional information on RLL-1 I would greatly appreciate it. I would
also, of course, be interested in current applications of RLL-1 some of
which you mentioned in the paper.
Thanks for your time.

Use of RLL-1
I am both impressed, and sympathetic, that you were able to plow thru that
memo. As you may have realized, it was intended more to drive home a
point than to serve as a guide to prospective RLL-1 users. In particular,
it wasn't much in the way of a primer, or even reference guide to this
system. And unfortunately, neither of these essential manuals now exist.
Despite their absense, and RLL-1's current immaturity, I would still like
to see RLL-1 in use -- it is my hope that such applications will help us
to both design and upgrade RLL-1, by providing the strains needed to keep
us from building too much, or too little, into the released system.
So much for overhead. In terms of things I can do now:
(1) I will add you to the distribution list for the RLL Bulletin Board,
and will soon forward to you its two prior messages.
(2) There is a companion memo, containing all sorts of (increasingly more
dated) low level stuff about our actual implementation: "The Detail of
RLL-1", HPP-80-23. I'd be glad to send you a copy, if you are interested
in struggling thru the real guts of this system. Just send me your
snail-mail address.
(3) On this theme, is there any literature I should read, to familarize
myself with your project?
Let me ask now what your time frame is -- when will you have data you
actually wish to enter into some system? Do you have any feel for how
this information should be structured, or know what sorts of inferencing
you anticipate performing on this data?
(One final bit of propaganda: One of RLL's real strong points is the fact
that that last question is meaningful. Other systems simply present the
specification required of your data, augmented with an apology that that
representation language is inapplicable for your task unless your task can
be molded into that framework. RLL takes another tack -- that you the
user should be allowed to select and design the interface you wish.)
Enough hard sell. Please let me know if I can be of any future assistance.

Doug,
It was great seeing you again at the Expert Systems Workshop.
Is there a possibility that the Spills code is in good enough
shape that I can play with it a little on SUMEX? This would be
the ideal time for me to try understanding the RLL system.

Carroll:
There now exists a RLL mailing list, intended for interested people
to share their views/apprehensions, etc, on topics related to
representation language languages. Would you like your name added to this
list? If so, what address should we use? Is there anyone else you know
who should be added?
